A 36-year-old man was shot three times after he tried to fight off armed robbers in the foyer of the Standard Bank on Main Road in Plumstead where he intended depositing money.

Provincial police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed that the man was shot and wounded, after three unknown armed robbers stole an undisclosed amount of cash from him.

He said the man was about to deposit the money when the incident happened at about 10.30am.

Warrant Officer Keith Chandler said the man had attempted to fight off the robbers and refused to hand over the money bag.

He was shot in the right leg and as he attempted to run out of the foyer he was shot in the left leg and in the ribs.

“He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital,” he said.

Chandler said the area was cordoned off for some time while forensics teams combed the scene.

The suspects fled with the money, in a black VW Golf, registration number CA 151 800.

Cases of armed robbery and attempted murder were opened at Diep River police station.

Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Warrant Officer Calla Gerstner on 021 710 7340 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

* According to the BKM Neighbourhood Watch site, on Friday November 1, Diep River police officers chased after two men they had been observing outside the FNB in Plumstead.

It was reported that an off-duty police reservist saw three men close to the bank in Main Road.

He watched the men, who appeared to be behaving suspiciously, before he alerted officers who were parked nearby in an unmarked police vehicle.

The two “suspicious” men sped off in separate vehicles and police gave chase.

Police caught up with one suspect in Grassy Park. The suspect, from Nyanga, was arrested.

Police found he had criminal cases pending, and that the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen.

In the car police also found a computer and bank card machine communicator.
